Health care financing in Nigeria: Implications for achieving universal health coverage — Uzochukwu 2015

Universal health coverage depends on a country's health care financing (UHC). Because it determines whether needed health services are affordable. Health financing in Nigeria is varied. The extent to which such health sector will succeed in health care financing depends on the proportionate contribution from these sources. Unfortunately, Nigeria struggles to blend these sources. This review covers Nigerian health care financing, including policies to improve it, using relevant literature. Search terms included health care financing Nigeria, public health financing, financing health, and financing policies. Articles and reports cited additional publications. English-only papers were reviewed. Searches were date-free. It notes that tax revenue, OOPs, donor funding, and health insurance finance Nigerian health care (social and community). To achieve universal coverage using health financing as a strategy, Nigeria needs to review its health financing system and use resources more efficiently while removing financial barriers to access by shifting focus from OOPs to other hidden resources. The national health bill also requires presidential assent and swift implementation.
