Immunosuppression and infection in multiple myeloma—Jacobson 1986

Multiple myeloma patients risk serious bacterial infections. Such individuals have reduced primary antibody response, complement, and granulocyte function. Suppressor monocytes are responsible for the reduced humoral response. Although unproven, myeloma patients should receive Pneumovax (Merck Sharp & Dohme, West Point, Penn). IV gamma globulin, another potential therapy and prophylactic, needs further study.
