Analysis of a Medical Translation: Terminology and Cultural Aspects - rask 2008

This essay discusses translating a medical book from English to Swedish. As a primary source, I used the British nursing textbook Nursing Older People. Sue Davies, Barry Aveyard, and Ian J. Norman wrote Person-centered dementia care. Terminology and culture caused translation problems. This analysis reveals how these challenges were solved by analyzing several translation theories, such as Munday (2001), who references to Koller's theory about equivalence and Vinay and Darbelnet's model of direct and oblique translation, and Ingo (2007), who accounts for text sort standards. Terminological challenges involved determining the best phrase for diagnosis, diseases, organs, and symptoms. Old Graeco-Latin and 1990s English terminology were used. Other phrases connected to epidemiology and the Swedish Social Services Act's senior care organization. Using field-specific terms and collocations in parallel texts helped make a good choice. The cultural aspects included Swedish and British national institutions and organizations. Find a cultural counterpart or explain the term in a footnote.
