Psycho-Social Prehabilitation Before Surgery in Oncology - Datta 2022
Prehabilitation is a new idea in the field of anesthesia and preoperative care for patients. In addition to preparing the patient physically, it is important to prepare the patient mentally before any complicated surgery. Psychosocial prehabilitation begins with a clear, honest, and reassuring conversation with the patient. Handling hard conversations that are tailored to the patient takes a lot of skill. Psychological parts of prehabilitation before surgery include dealing with psychiatric conditions that have already been diagnosed or that have just started. Prehabilitation is best done by a team that includes surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, physiotherapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and other specialists. Along with a general discussion of psychological prehabilitation, this chapter will also talk about specific examples from oncosurgery, amputations, solid organ transplantation, thoracic surgeries, and other areas. The reader will learn how to deal with specific patient groups, such as children and teenagers, patients with different abilities, patients with cognitive problems, and people with serious and long-lasting mental illnesses. To get patients with complicated medical conditions to trust doctors again, they should be involved in their treatment before and after surgery. The authors think that psychological prehabilitation will become standard practice in the near future.
