Rebuilding a Statewide Network of Community Health Centers for the Medically Underserved — Verderber 2013

Among Louisiana′s 64 parishes, the Strategic Facility Improvement (SFI) strategy has resulted in the replacement of 44 outpatient clinics and 28 clinic restoration capital improvement projects. To date, $67.3 million has been committed on this endeavour. The SFI's mission is to improve the health of medically underserved patient populations. It is still the only capital improvement initiative of its kind, having been in continuous operation since 1991. The SFI consists of predesign needs assessment, analysis of alternate site planning options, historic preservation options in the adaptation of notable community civic resources to healthcare uses, and post-occupancy evaluation of completed capital improvements with the goal of learning positive lessons that can be carried forward into future efforts. It is supported by a statewide public health agency and is based on advocacy. The conversation is centered on a 21-year status report and is critically reviewed from the standpoint of major stakeholders.
