CHatGPT — WIkipedia

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI and debuted in November 2022. It is based on OpenAI's GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 models and has been fine-tuned for conversational applications using supervised and reinforcement learning techniques. The chatbot gained attention for its articulate responses across various fields but has been criticized for confidently delivering false information.

By January 2023, ChatGPT had garnered over 100 million users and contributed to OpenAI's valuation of $29 billion. Its success also influenced the development of other chatbots like Google's Bard and Meta AI's LLaMA. ChatGPT Plus subscribers have access to GPT-4, while the free tier is limited to GPT-3.5.

ChatGPT's training involved reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), where human trainers engaged in dialogues with the model to fine-tune its responses. Trainers ranked the model's previous responses, creating "reward models" used for further optimization. Additionally, OpenAI employed outsourced workers to classify harmful content, which trained the model to detect such content in the future.

The chatbot is capable of performing various tasks beyond human conversation, including writing computer programs, mimicking CEOs, composing music and essays, answering test questions, translating text, and simulating chat rooms or an ATM. ChatGPT's training data is filtered to remove potentially offensive prompts.

However, ChatGPT has limitations, such as occasionally providing incorrect or nonsensical answers, limited knowledge about events after September 2021, and potential algorithmic biases. Prompt engineering techniques have been used to bypass content restrictions, but OpenAI has taken steps to mitigate jailbreaking attempts.

OpenAI launched ChatGPT as a free service but introduced a premium version called ChatGPT Plus in February 2023. The company also released a mobile app for iOS and made the ChatGPT and Whisper model APIs available to developers. In March 2023, a security breach exposed some user information.

The release of GPT-4 in March 2023 marked a significant improvement over ChatGPT, with additional capabilities like taking photos as input. ChatGPT Plus subscribers have access to GPT-4.

Reception to ChatGPT has been mixed, with positive reviews praising its capabilities and negative criticisms highlighting issues like factually ambiguous responses and potential risks to society. Some individuals and organizations have called for a pause in large AI experiments, while others have raised concerns about the impact on democracy and the reliability of online content.
