Translation and Psychometric Testing of the Icelandic Version of the MISSCARE Survey - Bragadóttir 2015

Missed nursing care, or standard care that isn't provided, is a new concept in nursing and hadn't been explored in Iceland before this study. The aim of the study was to translate MISSCARE from English to Icelandic. The MISSCARE Survey-Icelandic was translated and psychometrically tested in six steps: forward translation, revision, back translation, revision, pilot testing, data collection, and psychometric testing. Back-translation involved original and target-country linguists, physicians, and scholars. Pilot-test and national study data were used for psychometric assessment. Nursing workers in Iceland's medical, surgical, and intensive care units were targeted. In November-December 2011, pilot study data was obtained, and in March-April 2012, nationwide study data was collected. The MISSCARE Survey asks about missing nursing care activities (part A) and reasons for missed care (part B). The pilot study had a 57% response rate (67/118), whereas the national study had a 69% response rate (599/864). Part A's test-retest Pearson's correlation was 0.782 (p 0.001) and part B's was 0.530 (p 0.05). Overall part B and subscale Cronbach's alpha ranged between 0.795-0.894. Part B's confirmatory factor analysis showed a satisfactory model fit for Communication, Material, and Labor resources. The MISSCARE Survey was back-translated successfully from US English to Icelandic. Validity was confirmed in Icelandic. This study supports MISSCARE's widespread use.
