Translation Errors in Ophthalmology - zeitz 2013

As worldwide networks grow, interlingual ophthalmic communication is crucial. Similar to any other specialized field, this poses the challenge that precision is required for a perfect translation, yet translators typically lack the scientific and linguistic competence to meet this demand. Even within one language, ophthalmological vocabulary is partially ill-defined, and this difficulty multiplies when translated. Medical translation errors can have fatal repercussions. This case study outlines the most common translation error mechanisms in ophthalmology and a potential solution.
