Lack of medical expertise and unfamiliarity with medical language and phraseology are the main obstacles in medical translation. A bilingual introduction to essential anatomical, diagnostic, symptomatic, surgical, laboratory, and clinical words can help. In addition to translation practice, a medical translation course should cover valuable resources, Latin and Greek roots, affixes, and combining forms, frequent medical abbreviations, "lay" terms versus medical words, medical English style, and medical journal article structure.
