Correlation between hospital finances and quality and safety of patient care — Abe 2019

This study examined the association between hospital financial performance and quality/safety of care using principal component analysis to produce robust measures of both. The results showed a clear relationship between hospital financial performance and hospital quality/safety performance score, with strong financial performance associated with improved patient reported experience of care. Financially stable hospitals were found to be better able to maintain highly reliable systems and provide ongoing resources for quality improvement. The study suggests that previous equivocal results may have been due to poor predictive validity.
