Medical Translators and the Idea of Translation in Portugal in the Late Eighteenth Century: The Case of Books on Medicine - DeNipoti 2017

This research reveals how Portuguese translations influenced the publishing business in the late 18th century and how standard Portuguese developed. Focusing primarily on medical writings translated into Portuguese from published works or manuscripts between 1770 and 1810, the translators' - and sometimes the editors' - paratexts in the translated books on medicine and pharmacy are explored and cross-referenced against reports produced by the censors on the same works, either physicians appointed by the censorship organizations or physicians/censors, in an attempt to find answers, however imperfect, to the issues posed.
